WHY ARE WE IN ROMANIA?
Gary first felt called to Romania back in 1996 and made his first trip that August. He has a great passion for football, having been a semi professional footballer for 22 years, and hoped this would be his ministry. But instead God used Gary to help set up a Christian printing ministry, which is still going strong today. It prints a daily devotional, "The Word for Today," written by Bob Gass for United Christian Broadcaster, and at the present date they have printed over 3,000,000 copies in Romanian. This is a real blessing to the people of Romania and has brought many people to know Jesus as their saviour. Over the next 10 years, Gary made over 40 trips to Romania, mainly to do with the printing and showing the Jesus film in the villages.
But in 2006 Gary heard a sermon about the story of the talents. Luke 19;11-26
Gary felt challenged about how could he use his talents (gifts), especially football, for God's glory. After much prayer he thought, this is the time! Wouldn't it be a great opportunity to use soccer as some form of outreach in Romania? So in the summer of 2007, Gary and a good friend from WEC, Graeme Stevens, went to Romania and held 4 soccer outreaches for over 150 children. This was a great success; teaching the kids soccer skills, penalty and team competitions as well as giving away medals and other prizes. Everyday a gospel message was given and on the final day, the children watched the Jesus film. This was the birth of a vision, "Soccer outreach in Eastern Europe". It has 3 objectives: for the children to have a great time, for them to hear the gospel and for the church to get in contact with the local children. These are the principles which we use to this day, wherever we have soccer outreaches we work with a local evangelical church.
Since moving to Romania in 2008 we have had over 50 soccer outreaches in Romania and Hungary and had the opportunity to bring the Good News to thousands of children.
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; But we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 1 Corinthians 9:24-25
